Fundamentals
& Definitions

The definitional backbone of go-to-market: what each construct is, where it sits in the system, and what it does not mean.

GTM is a system, not a checklist. These 43 foundational definitions establish the precise meaning of each construct — so a strategy call, a model, and a team conversation all use the same vocabulary. Start with Go-to-Market, ICP, and PMF.

What this cluster covers

C1 is the entry point to the GTM World Model. It covers the foundational constructs that every other cluster assumes you know: what a go-to-market strategy is, how to define an ideal customer profile, what product-market fit means (and how to measure it before it is obvious), how to size a market without fooling yourself, and how to position a product against alternatives.

These are the highest query-volume definitions in the model — "what is ICP", "what does PMF mean", "how do I think about TAM vs SAM vs SOM". Each definition is self-contained: you can lift it and use it without reading the surrounding model. That is the standard the GTM World Model holds every entry to.

The cluster spans seven categories: Meta & foundations (the system itself), Strategy (the shape of a GTM approach), Frameworks (reusable analytical structures), Market sizing (TAM/SAM/SOM and related constructs), ICP & targeting (who the product is for), Positioning (why you, why now, why over them), and Pricing (value capture mechanics). A clean understanding of C1 is a precondition for the harder questions in C5 (buyer-state and brand) and C7 (regimes and strategy half-lives).
